Baldur's Gate 3 Romance Guide
A Baldur's Gate 3 romance guide covering which companions can be romanced, approval requirements, and how to lock in a partner across all three acts.
Baldur’s Gate 3 Romance Guide
Romance in Baldur’s Gate 3 is approval-driven and surprisingly deep. You can pursue one main relationship (plus a few casual flings) across the campaign. This guide explains how the system works and who is available.
Romanceable Companions
- Shadowheart (Cleric) — slow burn, loyal.
- Astarion (Rogue) — manipulative, story-heavy.
- Lae’zel (Fighter) — fierce, respect-based.
- Gale (Wizard) — intellectual, needy.
- Wyll (Warlock) — heroic, straightforward.
- Karlach (Barbarian) — warm, but physically limited until Act 3.
- Halsin (Druid) — joins late, poly-friendly.
- Minthara (Drow) — evil-path option.
How Approval Works
Every companion tracks a hidden approval score. Dialogue and quest choices that match their values raise it. To start a romance:
- Keep them in your active party.
- Pick dialogue options they like (see each companion’s guide).
- Trigger the Act 1 party / tiefling celebration scene and choose your partner’s offer.
- Sleep with them at camp to lock the relationship.
Locking It In
- The Act 1 tiefling party is the first real romance checkpoint.
- In Act 2, a companion-conflict scene (“I need to talk”) can lock you into one partner or open a poly route (with Halsin in Act 3).
- Rejecting or ignoring a companion past their checkpoint closes that route.
Final Tips
You can pursue multiple flings but only one deep romance typically survives to Act 3. Save before the tiefling party to experiment. Karlach and Halsin require specific Act 3 progress (her engine upgrade, his recruitment) before their romances complete.
