Baldur's Gate 3 Companion Approval Guide
How approval works in Baldur's Gate 3, what each companion likes, and how to build relationships for romances and better endings.
Baldur’s Gate 3 Companion Approval Guide
Approval tracks how much each companion likes your decisions. High approval unlocks romance, unique dialogue, and better personal quest outcomes. Low approval can turn a companion hostile or cause them to leave. This guide shows what each companion values and how to farm approval efficiently.
How Approval Works
- Each companion has hidden approval points ranging from -100 to +100.
- Major story choices and camp dialogues shift approval.
- You can view rough standing by talking to them and watching their reactions.
- Approval is per-companion; one decision can please Shadowheart and anger Lae’zel.
Companion Preferences
| Companion | Likes | Dislikes |
|---|---|---|
| Shadowheart | Shar devotion, pragmatism, cruelty to “deserved” targets | Needless mercy, open defiance of her god |
| Lae’zel | Strength, Githyanki pride, directness | Weakness, hesitation, flirting with enemies |
| Astarion | Freedom, cruelty to abusers, autonomy | Self-righteousness, controlling him |
| Gale | Magic, knowledge, witty banter | Destroying artifacts, anti-mage talk |
| Wyll | Heroism, protecting the weak, order | Cruelty, deals with devils |
| Karlach | Kindness, standing up to bullies | Needless cruelty, cruelty to friends |
| Halsin | Nature, balance, protecting the vulnerable | Wanton destruction |
Fast Approval Tips
- Long rest often. Many approval moments and personal scenes trigger only at camp after specific events.
- Bring them along. Companions you leave at camp do not witness choices.
- Side with their values in camp talks. Early conversations set the tone.
- Gift items. Some companions appreciate specific gifts found in the world.
Romance Lock-In
Romance requires high approval and the right camp scene, usually after a major Act 1 beat. Missing the window can lock you out. Key pointers:
- Shadowheart / Lae’zel / Karlach / Astarion each have a distinct Act 1 trigger; pursue early.
- Gale and Wyll have their own paths and may conflict with others.
- Polyamory is possible with some pairings but not all.
Approval and Endings
Companion approval affects who survives and how the final act resolves. Neglected companions may refuse to help or turn against you. If you want a specific ending for a character, keep their approval healthy through Acts 2 and 3.
Final Advice
You cannot please everyone. Pick the companions you want to keep and steer decisions toward their values. Romance and best endings reward consistency, not compromise.
