Astarion Companion Guide in Baldur's Gate 3
A complete Baldur's Gate 3 Astarion companion guide covering his vampire spawn origin, best Rogue build, approval likes and dislikes, and his Act 1 bite decision.
Astarion Companion Guide in Baldur’s Gate 3
Astarion is the vampire spawn Rogue companion and one of the most popular characters in Baldur’s Gate 3. His personal quest — centered on the parasite and his master Cazador — is one of the most morally charged arcs in the game. This guide covers building and recruiting his loyalty.
Class and Role
Astarion starts as a Level 1 High Elf Rogue. He is your stealth, lockpicking, and single-target burst specialist.
- Best build: Thief Rogue (second bonus action) with dual crossbows or shortswords. Take Gloom Stalker Ranger 5 / Rogue 7 for an even stronger stealth archer variant.
- Maximize Dexterity; keep him at range or in stealth for Sneak Attack.
Approval: Likes and Dislikes
Astarion is selfish, sardonic, and values personal freedom above all.
He approves of:
- Cruel or pragmatic choices that benefit him
- Defying authority and moralizing do-gooders
- Letting him feed (early on) and asserting dominance over his own body
He disapproves of:
- Acts of selfless heroism and protecting strangers at cost to yourself
- Refusing his more monstrous impulses
Act 1: The Bite Decision
Early on Astarion asks to bite you at camp. This is a pivotal moment:
- Let him bite you: Grants him approval and a small HP buff, but you lose a bit of health each long rest until resolved.
- Refuse: Lower approval, but no downside.
- Attack/call him out: Can lead to a fight or a different loyalty path.
None of these lock his quest, but they set the tone for his character development.
Final Tips
Astarion’s quest resolves in Act 3 against Cazador. How you handle that fight defines his ending — free him or let him ascend. Keep him stealthed for opening Sneak Attacks, and use his Spider Meat / Daylight immunity (when in shade) to your advantage in bright maps.
